8th April 2024
With approximately 1 in 5 Australian adults experiencing a common mental illness each year, equipping individuals with the skills to provide support is crucial.
Mental Health First Aid training provides practical skills to assist someone facing a mental health problem, whether it's a friend, family member, coworker, or another adult in the community. MHFA courses empower participants with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to recognise, understand, and respond appropriately.
Recognised by Suicide Prevention Australia as a safe and effective suicide prevention program, MHFA courses are suitable for individuals, workplaces of all sizes, and volunteer and community-based groups. Any adult aged 18 and above can attend, making it accessible to all.
Cherie Chun Tie, an accredited Standard and Youth Mental Health First Aid Facilitator, exemplifies the dedication to mental health education. Employed as a Practice Supervisor at Centacare North Queensland, Cherie passionately imparts practical skills in mental health and suicide intervention. With a background in Psychology and Mediation, coupled with 16 years of experience at Centacare NQ, Cherie brings a wealth of knowledge to her training sessions.
Since becoming an accredited facilitator in early 2021, Cherie has conducted 20 Standard MHFA courses across Townsville, Mount Isa, and even as far as Normanton in the Gulf region, reaching approximately 200 individuals. Cherie is known for her informative, engaging, and practical approach, leaving participants feeling confident in addressing mental health concerns.
Participants often commend the practical aspects of the course and express relief at gaining the skills to initiate mental health conversations—a task that many find daunting. Cherie's aim is for individuals to leave her courses feeling equipped and empowered to support others in their communities.
At Centacare NQ our next MHFA course is scheduled for May 1st and 2nd at Centacare NQ's premises in Townsville. We also have a range of options coming up across North Queensland.
